Turtle dug a small hole in the soft dirt. He dropped a brown seed inside and patted the dirt down.

Every morning, Turtle poured water from his shell cup. A monkey swung overhead and called, "Why bother?"

Days passed. Turtle kept pouring. One morning, a tiny green shoot broke through the soil.

Turtle turned the plant toward the sun and hummed. The shoot grew and grew. Leaves opened like green umbrellas.

The trunk thickened. A heavy bunch of yellow bananas appeared. Monkey's mouth opened wide.

A banana dropped with a soft thump. Turtle peeled one and held it out.

Monkey took a bite. His eyes went round. He grinned so wide his whole face crinkled.

Turtle smiled back. His shell was warm in the sun.
